We had the pleasure of discovering Dutch Henry winery on our first afternoon in Napa Valley. We were staying in a small hotel in Calistoga. My daughters and husband were itching for something to do, but it was around 2:30 and several of the wineries that I had called were booked for the day. I searched for family friendly wineries near our hotel, and Dutch Henry popped up only 2.6 miles away.
I called and was greeted by a friendly voice saying that it was fine for us to stop by with no reservation and that children were welcome. We drove the short distance to Dutch Henry and pulled down a long drive and into a beautiful farm-like setting, with a view of rolling hills, green pastures and rows of grape vines on the verge of awakening.
We parked the car and walked toward the open and inviting tasting room. Our children joined us in the high ceilinged, casual room for a bit, just long enough to cuddle the two resident cats, Floyd and Maybelline, and to greet our lovely hostess, Rachel, and then set off to enjoy the gardens, creek and chickens on the spacious grounds. There were several other children to play with, which was a bonus for them.
My husband and I got to the business of tasting several different Dutch Henry wines, including a delicious taste from the barrel. We met and chatted with some other families while enjoying our tasting, and the casual and relaxed atmosphere allowed for lovely conversation. We loved the friendly conversation, laid back professionalism, kid-friendly environment and beautiful grounds.
The wine was authentic and highly recommended for the delicious barrel tasting. We also ended up liking the wine so much that we brought a nice bottle home, and hope to visit again in the near future.
If you want to experience a top family run winery, then you must visit the hidden gem that is Dutch Henry.
