Fast Food Drive Throughs May Be Banned After Study Links Them To Climate Change

Posted: Oct 17, 2019

As the war on climate change amps up, a familiar fast food store feature may soon be in the firing line.

A slew of fast food outlets across the US have nixed their drive-through option after the ubiquitous feature was linked to climate change.

Following a 2018 Canadian study, which analysed the effect of fast-food drive-through service bans in 27 cities, a number of US councils have passed their own drive-through bylaws, banning the feature that sees vehicles idling while food is prepared.

While drive-through services have long been favoured for their speed and convenience, concerns around noise, traffic congestion and air pollution have been making waves around the globe. And now there's plenty of science to back it.

Among the US cities looking the phase out drive-throughs, most recently Minneapolis jumped on the trend in a bid to cut greenhouse gas emissions 80 per cent by 2050.

The council cited vehicles emissions, air pollution and an excess of paved areas to facilitate the service as environmental areas of concern.

Elsewhere, a section of New York town Orchard Park issued a ban on new drive-throughs, California's Long Beach placed a temporary ban as they analyse the environmental impact of the feature, and Portland introduced new zoning that allows pedestrians and cyclists to use the drive-through — so it's no longer exlusively the domain of a vehicle.
