As the close of the year rapidly approaches, its good to know how things are wrapping up.
IN THE RED. The majority of spirits categories were up in the 13 weeks, but there were a few in the red.
. Brandy sales down 3.1%, volumes down 3.8%
. Blended Scotch sales down 0.6%, volumes down 3.8%
. Scotch volumes were down 2.4%, but sales were up 0.8%
WINE. Total wine sales were up just 0.7%, while volumes were down nearly 2% for the 13 weeks through October 5.
Table wine was a drag on total category performance, with sales roughly flat and volumes down 2.5% for the period. There was a lot of red on the table wine spreadsheet.
Red table wine was down 1.6% in sales and nearly 4% in volumes. White table wine sales were up nearly 1% and volumes were down 1.2%. Pink table wine sales growth was better, up 2.2%, but volumes were down too, -2.5%. Though red wine consumption typically picks up more in the colder months over white and pink.
The only table wine varietals reporting growth for the period include: cabernet sauvignon, pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc and rosé blend.
SPARKLING. Meanwhile, sparkling wines continue to do well, with sales up just over 6% and volumes up nearly 4% for the 13 weeks led by sparkling rose and prosecco.
Sparkling rose sales were up 19.4%% and volumes were up 22%. Prosecco sales were up 14.3% and volumes were up 12.6% for the period.
